Suicide prevention A new British Standard has been launched by the British Standards Institution

A new British Standard, BS 30480: Suicide prevention in the workplace, has been launched by the British Standards Institution (BSI). It provides employers with a clear and practical framework to help prevent suicide and to support people affected by suicide within workplace settings.

The standard supports organisations to:

  • Identify and reduce suicide risk factors linked to work
  • Create psychologically safe workplace cultures
  • Put clear intervention and support pathways in place
  • Respond appropriately when a suicide or suicide attempt affects the workplace
  • Support managers and colleagues with confidence and compassion

Importantly, BS 30480 is designed to be applicable to organisations of all sizes and sectors. It helps employers embed suicide prevention into existing health, safety and wellbeing systems, rather than treating it as a standalone issue.

For businesses, adopting BS 30480 demonstrates leadership, social responsibility and a genuine commitment to protecting workforce wellbeing because one death is always too many.

BS 30480 helps organisations take practical, proportionate steps to prevent suicide, support employees who may be struggling, and respond compassionately when suicide affects the workplace.
